Households will not have to apply for planning permission for micro-renewables under proposals issued 4th April.

All micro-renewables will become permitted development as long as they meet height, size and noise requirements. Applying to England only, the proposals were issued by the Department of Communities and Local Government.

The requirements are stated for each technology:

  • Solar panels: Cannot stand more than 15cm above a roof or from a wall.
  • Wind turbines: Cannot stand more than 3m above a roof and the diameter of the blades cannot be more than 2m. Turbines must also meet noise limits of 30dB for rooms inside the house on which they are mounted and 40dB for neighbouring properties.
  • Heat pumps: Will have to meet the same noise limits as wind turbines.
