Many UK businesses whose emission reduction strategies rely on the purchase of green electricity are going to see plans frustrated this year by a growing shortage of accredited supplies, according to a survey of corporate energy purchasing plans by Datamonitor.
The study has found that some 3,500 of the UK’s biggest energy users will attempt to purchase 34 TWh of green electricity this year. This figure compares with a total accredited supply of just 12 TWh in England and Wales in 2006, leading to the inevitable conclusion that demand is going to outstrip supply.

New renewable energy capacity, particularly wind power, is under construction or in the planning pipeline, but not on anything approaching the scale needed to meet such rapidly increasing demand.
