We have heard a lot about how well the UK is supposedly progressing towards reducing its carbon footprint. Now it seems that the UK has only managed to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by exporting them to other countries. A government advisor and professor at Oxford University, Dieter Helm, has said that including emissions from imported goods and international transport, the UKs emissions have actually risen by a 20% since 1990.

For some sceptics the results of the study reported in The Guardian on November 30 on the benfits of domestic wind turbines will come as no surprise. It all depends on where you are. Building Research Establishment(BRE), which advises the government and private sector, has found that in built-up towns and cities weak winds and turbulence mean that turbines are likely to add to, not subtract from, a home's carbon footprint.

The report by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors that new homeowners acting on information provided in an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) will have to wait up to 208 years to recoup the costs of their energy saving measures was not encouraging, if we are trying to convince people of the ecomonic sense of installing renewables in their homes. While it may not pay for our use during the timespent in the house, the next occupants will benefit and so will the planet. Surely that is what it is all about really, securing the future for our children and not for our own benefit? Or have I missed something?

Residents of Crawley have been urged to reduce their energy consumption after the town was named the worst in the south-east for CO2 emissions.
According to a table produced by British Gas, each house in the West Sussex town emits an annual average of 5,820 kg of CO2, making it the most inefficient settlement in the region, closely followed by nearby cities such as Brighton and Portsmouth.

Interesting BBC news item.

A "green gulf" has emerged between low income and better off households in the drive towards being environmentally friendly, according to charities. Organisations contacted by BBC Scotland said there was a willingness across all social groups to "go green". However, they added that people who were struggling financially found it difficult to make their shopping and homes eco-friendly. Friends of the Earth said green living was harder for poorer families.
