Flying certain foods around the world may be less environmentally harmful than buying locally, said Terry Leahy, Chief Executive of the world's third biggest retailer Tesco , announcing new research funding. Concerns are growing that a corporate dash to be seen to be doing something about climate change is causing more harm than good.

British Gas names energy-wasting towns

Content:

Residents of Crawley have been urged to reduce their energy consumption after the town was named the worst in the south-east for CO2 emissions. According to a table produced by British Gas, each house in the West Sussex town emits an annual average of 5,820 kg of CO2, making it the most inefficient settlement in the region, closely followed by nearby cities such as Brighton and Portsmouth.

South West has potential to lead the world on zero-carbon development

Content:

A major new study shows that South West England has the potential to be a world leader in zero carbon housing development. The groundbreaking report, commissioned by the South West Regional Assembly, South West RDA and Government Office for the South West shows that zero carbon homes are now technically viable in larger housing developments in South West England.

With over half a million homes expected to be built in the South West of England within the next twenty years, the study, thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, shows that the bulk of carbon savings from new construction in the region will come from using renewable energy in new homes. The study also estimates the cost of a number of technological options and suggests that biomass fuels like wood chip will be the dominant renewable energy source for new developments built to zero carbon standards.

Our Co-op to source food locally

Content:
The subject of the Radco Co-op store on the High Street has often come into the discussions at our meetings because of where most of the fresh produce has originated.

I met their Chief Executive Keith Tindall recently and he told me that to be able to offer the best deals they have to purchase the majority of their stock centrally and therefore all the well known brands are available at competitive prices. Fresh produce is also purchased centrally and has to “comply” with all the usual regulations, the main one being the ability to track the whole history of any product. Locally produced foods require a local compliance team and that is where the costs start to make them non viable.
