Questionnaires will be delivered to your door by the end of April to audit the energy consumption and recycling habits of all households in the Parish of Chew Magna. Please complete the questionnaire to help us identify potential future projects that will help to both reduce Chew Magna's carbon footprint and save you money.

Clear Your House Out Day

In April we are planning to hold a ‘Great Clear Out Day’. Everyone in Chew Magna who has something in their house, garage or attic in the way of furniture or appliances that they want to get rid of can clear it out on the allotted day.

The Local Food Guide

The Local Food Guide
The aim of this guide is to promote locally produced foods and other local suppliers within a ten mile radius of Chew Magna.

By increasing the awareness of the great food on our doorstep it becomes easier for everyone to choose a local option when considering where to buy food. Reducing the miles our food travels to get to the shops and the miles we travel to collect it is one sure way to also reduce the need for transportation.

Dragonflyer Mobility

The lifestyle of a typical UK person contributes about 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide to the earth’s atmosphere each year 20 - 30% of this is due to road transport.

We know this is causing climate change and we want to do something about it. We want you to help too !!

Adequate insulation of the walls and loft is a good cost efficient start, maybe helped by a grant.

Energy Consumption & CO2 Production

Raising awareness amongst people of the link between energy consumption and carbon dioxide production.

Run a quiz evening allowing people to see the direct connection between fossil fuel consumption and carbon dioxide and what alternatives can be used, You will be given data on different types of renewable electricity generation plant, the fuel/energy source, outputs, environmental impacts, running times, costs etc.

Tamil Nadu, India and the SCAD Project

Project details:

India, along with other developing world countries, is undergoing rapid change. The growth and development of countries such as India and China will have a major impact on the social, economic and environmental balance in the world.

Tamil Nadu is a state in Southern India with a population equivalent to that of the UK. Around the district of Tirunelveli a remarkable community support organisation has developed called SCAD, (Social Change and Development) that seeks to bring about positive change through encouraging people to take responsibility for their own lives and the lives of others.

SCAD is a non-governmental organisation that currently supports and links 450 communities in the area. They reach out to some of the poorest and maginalised people in India providing a programme of education, training, and development.

GoZero is pleased to have an association with this organisation that supports communities in action and reflects the values to which we aspire; to respect both people and the planet. We have a common desire to link communities in both the developed and developing world at grass roots recognising that we gain from sharing ideas and experience.

Cletus Babu who heads the organisation has visited and spoken in Chew Magna and hosted return visits from members of our community. During a visit to India in January 2006 we discussed a number of opportunities to work together.

TREE-LINK

Carbon Offset funds raised in the local community can be used to support the planting of new timber and fruit farm plantations in Tamil Nadu. An acre of newly planted woodland is a fraction of the cost of new woodland planted in the UK and would support viable and sustainable living in Tamil Nadu as well as providing shade for livestock, increasing biodiversity and improving the local water table.

Kitchen Garden Surgery & Seed Swap

The planned seed swap day on 25th Feb will enable us to exchange seeds we have no need for with others that we do want. Bill Blythe will be on hand to help us get the best from our seeds and will have other information available to help us improve our kitchen garden growing techniques.
